NEW Legislative Changes in Bargaining

It’s almost spooky what a “thriller” this is!

Our next District 1 Meeting will be on Wednesday, October 23rd from 4:30 to 8:00 PM at Duffy’s Tavern & Grill located at 4 Main Street (Route 1) in downtown Kennebunk. (And yes, as you can tell, it will have a Halloween theme!)

During the last legislative session, MEA was successful in lobbying for several legislative changes in bargaining, including, but not limited to:

• The removal of the 120-day intent to bargain notice

• Removal of restrictions on retired teachers returning to work

• Removal of the requirement that test scores/student growth measures be used in teacher evaluation PEPG systems

• Pay averaging option for hourly employees

• Starting with the 2020-21 school year the probationary period for teachers will be no longer than two years

• Allows teachers to grieve evaluation ratings

• Removes the requirement to use a teacher’s effectiveness rating in RIF procedures

• Increasing the minimum teacher salary

I am absolutely thrilled (sorry, just couldn’t help myself!) that C. J. Betit, our MEA Director of Bargaining and Research will be at this meeting to provide his expert analysis and guidance on the new laws that were passed, what the changes will be for your collective bargaining agreements, as well as a description of what the new laws do and – most important – what YOU need to do about these changes!

I strongly encourage local officers & building reps, grievance reps, current & former chief negotiators and negotiating team members (as I know several of you will not be negotiating this year) to attend this meeting.
