For the last few years, we’ve worked to build systems that support the core principles of proficiency-based
educational practices: 1) learner-centered culture; 2) clear learning targets at an appropriate level of rigor; 3)
instruction intentionally designed so learners can meet the targets; and 4) evidence of learning evaluated
using clear criteria. For many districts focus on these important principles has been obscured by the technical
aspects of implementing a proficiency-based grading system. Join us for a day to return to our focus on best
practices for effective teaching and learning.
Leaders: Megan Welter, Director of Curriculum, Assessment & Instruction, S. Portland; Julie Meltzer, Director
of Curriculum, Assessment and Instruction, Mt. Desert; Shelly Mogul, Director of Curriculum and Teaching,
Auburn; and Matt Shea, Coordinator of Student Achievement, RSU 2.
1. Explore the evidence-based practices embedded in the Core 4.
2. Understand how the Core Four work together to increase student learning.
3. Learn strategies to address challenges.
4. Assess where you are and where you want to go next.
