We are heartbroken at the murder of Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero in Biddeford this week. For months, Maine’s immigrant communities have lived under growing fear amid increased ICE enforcement actions. This week, those fears were deepened by the tragic loss of Johan, a young father, and member of our community.
As educators, we believe every Mainer deserves to live, learn, and work in a safe and supportive community, where they can go to school or work safely without fear. The growing ICE presence has undermined that sense of safety for many Maine families.
Mainers deserve a thorough and transparent investigation into this tragedy. Establishing the facts and providing clear answers is essential to maintaining public trust and ensuring accountability.
Our hearts are with the Biddeford community and everyone whose lives have been impacted by this heartbreaking event.
