Urgent: Masking Guidance Update
Earlier today MEA met with select superintendents, the Maine Department of Education and Dr. Shah to discuss the issue of masking in our schools. During this meeting, as MEA President, I wanted to ensure our member voices were heard on this important issue, as they have been in the past.
Dr. Shah explained, that following a thorough review of the latest U.S. CDC guidance, universal masking inside our schools will no longer be the recommendation but will be optional and at the discretion of the local school boards. This recommendation regarding the universal masking change goes into effect March 9th. However, this change, according to the Maine CDC “is dependent on continued stability in COVID-19 trends in Maine, including reduced hospitalizations, reduced virus levels in wastewater, and reduced school outbreaks and absenteeism, among other quantitative and qualitative factors.”
We are in a new phase of the pandemic, and even with the new masking optional recommendation, MEA stands firm in its belief that educators should feel safe in their schools and while at work. The MEA advocated for higher quality masks for our members, and those who still feel wearing a mask is the safest thing to do for your health or those around should continue to do so without hesitation. MEA is hopeful this change can safely bring continued normalcy to our students and staff, and encourages school boards and administrators to follow the science in their area and include educator voices as they make important decisions regarding masking requirements.
