We are holding an MEA Lobby Day on Thursday, February 22nd, at the state house in Augusta. We have unanimous support from the legislators on the Education and Cultural Affairs Committee to raise the minimum wage for our educational support professionals and also to raise the minimum teacher salary—UNANIMOUS SUPPORT, and now we need to support their efforts!It is time for YOU to show up and speak up!

This week is National School Counseling Week (February 5 – 9). Let’s be sure to thank our school counselors who support our students and us!

MEA AND NEA EVENTS, RESOURCES, AND AN UPDATE
Government Pension Offset/Windfall Elimination Provision (GPO/WEP—the Social Security Offsets)—several state affiliate presidents (including yours truly) along with NEA have been working together on this issue. The National WEP/GPO Repeal Task Force shared their call for action this week to contact the members of the House Committee on Ways and Means to push for a “mark-up” of H.R. 82. Rebecca is also a lead facilitator for NEA’s Leaders for Just Schools. Several other MEA members have also taken this training. The MEA contest, Read Across Maine, takes place next month. All Maine public school students, in all grades, are encouraged to participate! Each participating classroom sets a collective reading goal for the duration of the contest reflecting the number of books, pages, sight words, or reading hours the class aims to complete. Educators will receive access to a map where they can track the books read, pages completed, words, or hours spent reading by their classroom. Details here: READ ACROSS MAINE
New Webinar Series: AI in Education—Join NEA and the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) to discuss the rise of AI in education, February 1st through April 14th. Zach was a freshman at Columbine High School in April 1999, and now he’s in his thirteenth year of teaching there. A request from MEA-Retired: They will be including “Hearing from the Halls” in their convention book this year and are asking you to send along a word of appreciation for retired educators who substitute, volunteer in classrooms and libraries, participate in Day of Caring activities, and assist in cafeterias, and help our active educators and our students in so many ways. For our Aspiring Educators–The NEA-Retired Jack Kinnaman Scholarship Fund was established in honor of Jack Kinnaman, the then-serving NEA-Retired Vice President. There are five scholarships of $3,500 each. To be considered, aspiring educators must submit an applicationand several letters of recommendation. Applications are due on April 15, 2024.
