On the Tuesday before winter vacation, MEA President Jesse Hargrove and staff from the Maine Education Association (MEA) visited the W. G. Mallett School in Farmington to deliver lunch to the staff and as a well-deserved treat to thank them for their efforts to include students and the community in their daily work.

As part of American Education Week, the staff at Mallett School were nominated by their colleague, Sarah Reynolds—a math interventionist—to win a special lunch from MEA. Reynolds described the school as “a loving, nurturing, and welcoming environment for all students,” a sentiment that is evident from the moment you step through the doors.

Students’ artwork covers the hallways, a testament to the school’s commitment to celebrating both the creativity and academic success of their students who are in pre-k through second grade. In her nomination Reynolds said, “Staff members go above and beyond to provide individualized attention and support, ensuring that every student feels valued and encouraged.”

Mallett School isn’t just a place of learning; it’s a community hub. The school organizes numerous events that bring students, families, and staff together. From the annual Book Character Parade to Grandparents’ Day and Prime Time Reading Night, these gatherings foster a strong sense of belonging and shared purpose.

When the staff learned they had been nominated for the recognition, they were understandably thrilled. “It’s truly a special place,” one educator shared. “We have a great group of people.” The enthusiasm and dedication of the staff are evident in every interaction, creating a positive and inspiring learning environment for all.

It was an honor to visit W.G. Mallett School and celebrate the incredible work of the staff there. Their dedication to creating a welcoming and supportive environment is truly inspiring. We look forward to continuing to support our schools and the educators who make a difference every day.
