The following is a statement from MEA President Grace Leavitt regarding the announcement of Pender Makin as the new Commissioner of Education.
“The Maine Education Association is pleased to learn Governor-elect Mills has nominated Pender Makin as Commissioner of Education. This nomination is a step in the right direction for our public schools-Makin has the skills, classroom experience, and passion to help all our students succeed. For too long, educators in Maine have struggled due to insufficient resources, conflicting demands, and growing struggles among our students. The MEA looks forward to working with the Commissioner to make sure educators have the tools they need to give all our students the opportunities they deserve.“
