EPISODE SUMMARY

Nearly 1 in 4 students struggle to access menstrual products, which can lead to students losing focus in class, being bullied, or even skipping school to avoid embarrassment. Sarah “Mili” Milianta-Laffin, a STEM teacher in Hawai’i, was inspired by her students to address the problem of period poverty at her school—and later, the entire state. On this episode of School Me, she shares how she became known as “the period teacher”, and how educators can take on this often-ignored problem in their schools, too.

EPISODE NOTES

Update:  The bill Sarah and her students fought for to end period poverty in Hawaii Public Schools, SB 2821, recently passed and is now awaiting the Governor’s signature at the end of June 2022.
